The Challenge
Industrial Chemicals Limited (ICL), an independent national chemical manufacturer and trader of industrial chemicals, required independent verification of its FY2025 greenhouse gas inventory to provide independently verified evidence as part of its wider EcoVadis reassessment and sustainability reporting activities. The organisation had already undertaken the collection and calculation of emissions data using the SWEEP carbon management platform and sought third-party assurance to strengthen the credibility of its environmental disclosures and reporting processes.
The project involved reviewing emissions data across Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 categories, covering energy consumption, fuel use, fleet operations, business travel, waste management and water consumption. The work involved verifying not only the reported emissions figures but also the underlying methodologies, assumptions, organisational boundaries, emission factors and supporting evidence used to generate the carbon footprint.
Several factors required particular attention. As a first-time client engagement, time was needed to understand ICL’s reporting systems and internal data collection processes. The verification also had to be completed within a challenging two-week turnaround to meet EcoVadis submission deadlines. In addition, the complexity of the carbon footprint, spanning multiple sites and operational activities, demanded a structured and risk-based verification approach.
The Solution
Arthian established a collaborative verification process from the outset. A dedicated Microsoft Teams workspace was created to facilitate document sharing, progress updates, data requests and technical discussions. Following an initial high-level review of the completed carbon footprint, Arthian developed a bespoke risk-based Sampling Plan, focusing verification efforts on the largest and most material sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
The verification was undertaken in accordance with ISO 14064-3:2019 and the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, providing a limited level of assurance against recognised international best practice. Arthian assessed data quality, reviewed source evidence, checked emission factor application, verified calculation methodologies and recalculated key emissions sources to confirm accuracy and consistency.
Outcome & Value Delivered
The verification strengthened the credibility of ICL’s carbon reporting and provided independently assured evidence to support its EcoVadis reassessment. The project helped demonstrate a transparent and robust approach to environmental data management while giving the organisation greater confidence in its sustainability disclosures.
Beyond the technical outcomes, the project established a strong working relationship between Arthian and ICL. The collaborative approach, responsiveness and technical expertise demonstrated throughout the programme resulted in highly positive client feedback and has opened discussions around potential future support in areas such as EcoVadis improvement planning, sustainability reporting and wider energy and carbon management.
