The Challenge
AECOM engaged our Land Development team to deliver a Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment (DQRA) and a Remedial Option Appraisal and Strategy Report to fulfil planning conditions for an industrial warehouse site. The project presented a number of technical and regulatory challenges, requiring a robust and collaborative approach from the outset.
The site in question had known contamination issues, with potential risks to both human health and the water environment. The planning conditions demanded a comprehensive understanding of these risks and a clear strategy for mitigation. Given the complexity of the site and the sensitivity of the surrounding environment, it was essential to ensure that all stakeholders, including the environmental regulator, were aligned on the proposed approach.
The project also had to navigate site-specific constraints, including operational limitations and the need for practical, cost-effective remediation solutions. These constraints required careful consideration during the remedial option appraisal phase, ensuring that the selected strategy would be both technically sound and feasible within the context of the site’s future use.
The Solution
From the outset, our team adopted a holistic and collaborative approach to project delivery. Early engagement with the environmental regulator was key to establishing a shared understanding of the site’s challenges and agreeing on practical remedial solutions. This proactive communication helped streamline the regulatory process and ensured that all parties were aligned on the project’s objectives.
Our technical specialists conducted a thorough DQRA to assess the nature and extent of contamination at the site. This included detailed modelling of pollutant pathways and risk scenarios, with a focus on protecting human health and the water environment. The findings informed a comprehensive remedial option appraisal, which considered a range of potential solutions in light of the site’s constraints and future development plans.
Following stakeholder consultation, we developed a targeted remediation strategy that addressed the identified risks while remaining practical and achievable. The strategy included measures to mitigate contamination, improve site conditions, and ensure compliance with planning requirements.
Throughout the project, we maintained clear and regular communication with all stakeholders, ensuring transparency and shared understanding of the project’s progress and outcomes. The project successfully fulfilled the planning conditions, delivering a remediation strategy that was both technically robust and aligned with regulatory expectations.
