The Challenge
Queequeg Renewables approached our team for support in gaining planning permission for a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development. Queequeg Renewables required a comprehensive and coordinated planning consultancy service that could navigate the complex regulatory landscape and deliver a robust planning application within a tight timeframe.
The project presented several challenges. Firstly, the planning process for BESS developments is multifaceted, involving a wide range of environmental considerations and technical documentation. Secondly, the client needed support not only with the preparation of the application but also with stakeholder engagement, including the organisation of public consultation events. Lastly, the project demanded proactive communication and project management to ensure alignment between all parties and timely delivery of outputs.
Given the scale and sensitivity of the development, it was essential to provide a full suite of environmental assessments and planning documentation to support the application. This included screening for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), assessing potential contamination risks, evaluating flood risk and drainage strategies, and conducting ecological and landscape appraisals. The challenge lay in coordinating these diverse elements into a cohesive and persuasive planning submission that met both regulatory requirements and community expectations.
The Solution
To meet Queequeg Renewables’ needs, our team delivered a full in-house planning consultancy service, managing every aspect of the project from inception to submission. We began by developing a detailed project plan and timeline, ensuring that all required surveys, assessments, and reports were scheduled and delivered efficiently.
Our planning specialists prepared a comprehensive suite of documentation to accompany the application, including an Environmental Impact Assessment Screening Report, Planning Statement, Design and Access Statement, and a Preliminary Contamination Risk Assessment (Phase 1). We also produced a Landscape and Visual Appraisal, supported by high-quality visualisations and graphics, and an Illustrative Landscape Masterplan to demonstrate the project’s integration with its surroundings.
Ecological considerations were addressed through a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, while hydrological impacts were evaluated via a Flood Risk Assessment and Drainage Strategy. A Noise Impact Assessment was also conducted to ensure compliance with local environmental standards.
In parallel, we organised and facilitated public consultation events, ensuring that community feedback was captured and reflected in the Pre-application Consultation (PAC) Report. This proactive engagement helped build local support and demonstrated the client’s commitment to transparency and responsible development.
Throughout the project, our team maintained close communication with Queequeg Renewables, providing regular updates and responding swiftly to emerging needs. This proactive approach to project management and stakeholder engagement was highly valued by
the client and contributed to the successful submission of the planning application within the agreed timescale.
