What Is Glint and Glare?

Glint and glare are effects caused by sunlight reflecting off surfaces like solar panels:
 

• Glint – a brief, momentary flash of bright light
• Glare – a sustained, intense reflection that can cause visual discomfort or distraction

These reflections can pose safety risks or reduce amenity for receptors such as pilots, drivers, train operators and residents.

When Is a Glint & Glare Assessment Required?

Planning authorities and consultees may request an assessment when:

 
• Solar PV development or a reflective building facade is proposed near airfields, roads, railways or dwellings
• There is potential for visual hazard or amenity impact
• Failure to assess glint and glare can lead to planning refusal or delays in approval.
