At Arthian, we provide specialist archaeology and heritage consultancy across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, supporting development, planning, and environmental compliance in a range of regulatory contexts. Our experienced team delivers robust and proportionate heritage solutions tailored to local and national frameworks.

From strategic feasibility to post-consent fieldwork, we support clients across housing, transport, energy, minerals and infrastructure sectors – ensuring historic environments are understood, protected and seamlessly integrated into planning workflows.

Our Core Services

We offer a comprehensive range of archaeological and heritage services. Our services include:

Archaeological Investigations
Archaeology & Heritage Surveys
Heritage Assessments
Historic Building Surveys & Recording

Archaeological Investigations

Our investigations are tailored to planning conditions and development frameworks across the UK and Ireland.

Services include:

    • Trial trenching
    • Watching briefs
    • Geophysical surveys
    • Strip/map/sample excavation and post-excavation analysis

All fieldwork complies with relevant national standards.

Archaeology & Heritage Surveys

We combine field-based observation and desk-based research to assess archaeological potential.

Survey methods include:

  • Walkovers
  • Historic map regression
  • Aerial imagery analysis, and rapid scoping – all adapted to local authority guidance across the UK

Heritage Assessments

We deliver comprehensive heritage assessments that evaluate asset significance and guide planning decisions. Whether your development site is in England, Scotland, Wales, or Ireland, our consultants tailor each assessment to meet relevant national planning policies and local authority guidance.

We produce:

    •

    • Heritage statements and impact assessments
    • Settings assessments and significance appraisals
    • Mitigation strategies and conservation advice
    • Planning support for designated and non-designated heritage assets

From navigating the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in England, to complying with devolved legislation and heritage policies in Scotland, Wales and Ireland, our assessments are grounded in local context, ensuring your applications are informed, evidence-based and defensible.

Historic Building Surveys & Recording

Our heritage consultants provide detailed recording and analysis of historic buildings, associated buried features, and their settings across the UK. Whether you’re working in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, we tailor our services to local planning contexts and legislative frameworks to ensure compliance and deliver best-practice outcomes.

We offer:

    •

    • Level 1 (basic inspection) through Level 4 (detailed recording) documentation, including listed and locally significant unlisted buildings, groups of structures, and broader setting issues
    • Project support from inception – such as Environmental Impact Assessments and feasibility inputs – through to fulfilling planning permission, listed building consent, or legal obligations
    • Strategic guidance for regeneration and design proposals, with collaborative input for planning discussions and Historic Environment consultations, including liaison with authorities like Historic England, Historic Environment Scotland, Cadw (Wales), and Historic Environment Division NI
    • Integrated advice where heritage intersects with ecology – addressing considerations such as bat roosts, landscape constraints, or visual setting impacts

Where landscape or ecological constraints exist, we collaborate across disciplines to ensure documentation is coordinated, cost-effective and responsive to broader project needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do your services apply in Ireland, Scotland or Wales?

Yes—we operate across all four nations, including ROI and NI. Our team understands the different planning systems and heritage regulations applicable in each region.

What kinds of projects require archaeological investigations?

Fieldwork may be required for housing schemes, infrastructure developments, minerals and quarries or renewable energy projects. We provide scoped strategies and liaise with planning authorities to meet regional conditions.

Is a heritage assessment different in Ireland or Scotland?

The core principles remain the same, but requirements vary by planning authority. We tailor assessments to suit national guidance, such as the NPPF, Scottish Planning Policy, or the Irish Heritage Act.

Can you record a historic building outside of England?

Absolutely. Our team delivers building recording across the UK and Ireland, aligned with relevant regional standards and planning conditions.
