Environmental Management Systems ISO 14001: 2026 is coming

17th November 2025

Environmental Management Systems ISO 14001: 2026 is coming

ISO 14001:2015 the environmental management standard is undergoing revision in early 2026.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is expected to release the new version of ISO 14001 in first quarter of 2026. It has been 10 years since the standard was released. This is an expected iteration and update, building in additional enhancements and clarifications. It remains under the harmonised structure which has been so successful aiding with QHSE systems integration.

Why the change? ISO Standards are revised and updated periodically; focusing the purpose of the standards in a relevant, modern context. The update will officially include the text of The climate change amendment introduced in 2024 (ref. The update will officially include the text of climate change amendment (ref. ISO 14001:2015/Amd1:2024) introduced in 2024, plus additional clarifications and further alignment with the Annex A (ISO’s harmonised structure) for management system standards.

What’s proposed to change?

More significant changes as follows:

    • Climate change and environmental amendments (Clause 4.1.and 4.2):
The climate change amendment (https://www.iso.org/standard/88209.html) which was introduced in 2024 is being formalised into the body text of the published standard. Consideration is proposed to be more ‘front and centre’ with organisations to address use of natural resources, biodiversity and pollution levels.
    • Management of change (New clause 6.3):
Change management has a new specific planning clause – for organisational changes which are relevant to the environmental management system, a structured approach is to be taken to change management.

Clarifications of requirements and updates to ISO 14001 text in Planning, Operational Control and Improvement Clauses are also proposed. Further emphasis on lifecycle perspective of environmental aspects, additional focus on control of “outsourced processes” to control of “externally provided processes, products and services” and other minor wording changes are proposed.

And finally – the guidance in Annex A of the document will be updated and clarified, to support the intent of the ISO 14001 clauses (including clause changes) to help with consistent understanding and interpretation of Clause 4 -10 requirements which form the main body of the standard.

When will the new ISO 14001:2016 standard be published?

The ISO 14001:2026 standard is expected first quarter; current indications are that this may be around March 2026. There will be a mandatory transition timetable announced by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and your external certification audit body will also provide information.

    Transition timelines

The transition period for registered sites (those with a current ISO 14001:2015 Certificate) is likely to be around 18 months. As usual, during this timeline your Certificate will remain valid so long as your systems and performance are in conformance.

A note on Quality ISO 9001 and Occupational Health and Safety Management ISO 45001 updates:  The revision of ISO 9001 (quality management standard) was due around December 2025 but it is now planned to publish ISO 9001:2026 around September 2026. Tie-ins with systems integration with other standards include the climate change and risk/ opportunities area, an enhanced focus of leadership on promotion of cultural and ethical behaviours in a quality focused organisation.   ISO 45001 is expected to be updated in 2027.

Unlocking Low-Carbon Megawatts and Megabytes: Why Construction Access Determines Deliverability for Solar Farms and Data Centres

Across the UK and Ireland, solar farms and data centres are scaling at unprecedented speed. But an issue that rarely gets the attention it deserves is now becoming one of the biggest threats to deliverability – can critical loads even reach the site? Construction access is rapidly shifting from an afterthought to a strategic risk. To help developers, planners and investors navigate this challenge, our team of expert transport planners have put together a 4-part insight series exploring why access is now a critical-path issue, what typically goes wrong, and what can be done early to de-risk delivery.
