HAVs Consultancy

Arthian’s consultants provide specialist hand-arm vibration (HAV) monitoring to help employers assess and control the risks associated with vibrating tools and equipment. Our consultants deliver detailed exposure assessments, risk evaluations, and control strategies in line with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.

Whether you’re in construction, manufacturing, utilities, or maintenance, we can help you protect your workforce from developing health conditions such as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), and enable regulatory compliance.

Why HAV Monitoring Matters

Regular use of vibrating tools can lead to serious and irreversible health conditions, including:

  • Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Numbness, tingling, and loss of dexterity.
  • Reduced grip strength and long-term disability.

HAVS is a reportable condition under RIDDOR, and employers have a legal duty to assess and control exposure. Failure to do so can result in enforcement action, compensation claims, and reputational damage.

Our HAV Monitoring Consultancy Services

We combine technical accuracy with a practical understanding of site operations. Our consultancy support is tailored to your tools, tasks, and workforce, and aligns with HSE guidance and recognised good practice. We provide actionable insights with clear control recommendations, and offer training and awareness sessions to support long-term risk management.

Tool Vibration Assessments

We measure the vibration levels of tools and equipment using calibrated tri-axial accelerometers, providing:

  • Real-world vibration magnitude data (m/s² A(8)).
  • Comparison with manufacturer data.
  • Identification of high-risk tools and tasks.
  • Comparison with Exposure Action Value (EAV) and Exposure Limit Value (ELV).

Exposure Point Calculations

We calculate daily exposure points for each worker using:

  • Actual tool usage durations.
  • Measured or validated vibration levels.
  • This supports compliance with HSE guidance and informs control strategies.

Risk Assessment & Control Strategy

Our consultants provide a full HAV risk assessment, which may include:

  • Exposure profiling by task and role.
  • Recommendations for tool rotation and rest periods.
  • Advice on low-vibration tool selection.
  • Maintenance and inspection protocols.

Training & Awareness

We support your workforce with:

  • Toolbox talks and awareness sessions.
  • Guidance on safe tool use and grip techniques.
  • Support for health surveillance programmes.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Should You Monitor HAV Exposure?

You should carry out HAV assessments if:

  • Workers use vibrating tools or machinery regularly.
  • You’re unsure of exposure levels or tool performance.
  • Employees report symptoms such as numbness or tingling.
  • You’re introducing new tools or processes.
  • You’re responding to an HSE notice.

What is the Exposure Action Value (EAV) for HAV?

The EAV is 2.5 m/s² A(8). If this level is reached or exceeded, employers must take action to reduce exposure and implement a programme of control.

What is the Exposure Limit Value (ELV)?

The ELV is 5.0 m/s² A(8). This is the maximum daily exposure permitted by law. Exceeding this level is a breach of the regulations.

How is HAV exposure measured?

Exposure is calculated based on the vibration magnitude of the tool and the duration of use. We use real-time measurements or validated data to calculate daily exposure points.

Do I need to monitor every tool?

Not necessarily. We help you prioritise tools based on usage, vibration levels, and risk. Representative sampling is often sufficient for compliance.

Can Arthian help with tool selection and control measures?

Yes. We advise on low-vibration tools, maintenance schedules, administrative controls, and training to reduce exposure and improve safety.
