CBAM: What is it and why it matters

The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requires importers of carbon-intensive goods to pay for embedded emissions, aligning with EU carbon pricing and driving global supply chain decarbonisation. CBAM levels the playing field, prevents carbon leakage, and reshapes international trade.

What’s happening – and when?

CBAM is in its transition phase until 2025, requiring emissions reporting without financial penalties. From 2026, importers must purchase CBAM certificates for embedded emissions. UK legislation is expected to follow in 2027.

Our CBAM Services

We support businesses through the CBAM transition phase by guiding emissions reporting requirements until the end of 2025, preparing importers for certificate purchasing from 2026, and anticipating UK legislation expected to follow in 2027.

CBAM screening & readiness assessment

We assess how CBAM affects your operations, identify covered goods, evaluate emissions data availability, and deliver a risk dashboard with next steps. This initial screening helps you understand exposure, prepare for compliance, and prioritise action across your supply chain.

Our support includes:

  • Identifying CBAM-relevant goods within your product portfolio, based on EU regulations and tariff codes
  • Assessing emissions data availability, including Scope 1, 2, and embedded emissions from suppliers
  • Evaluating operational and supply chain exposure, including import volumes and country-of-origin risks
  • Delivering a readiness dashboard, highlighting key risks, data gaps, and compliance priorities
  • Outlining next steps, including data improvement, supplier engagement, and reporting preparation

CBAM data collection & emissions calculation

We build a transparent and auditable dataset aligned with CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) standards, ensuring full traceability from source to submission. This involves actively engaging suppliers to gather accurate emissions data across the value chain, applying robust methodologies to calculate embedded emissions, and validating inputs against regulatory benchmarks. Through close collaboration and rigorous quality checks, we ensure the integrity of the data, culminating in submission-ready files that meet CBAM compliance requirements and support confident reporting.

Supplier engagement support

We help you engage suppliers across tiers to collect accurate emissions data, clarify reporting formats, and close data gaps for CBAM compliance. Our supplier engagement support is designed to streamline collaboration and ensure consistent, high-quality data collection across complex supply chains. This includes:

  • Multi-tier supplier outreach: Coordinating engagement across direct and indirect suppliers to ensure broad coverage and participation.
  • Guidance on emissions data collection: Supporting suppliers with clear instructions, templates, and tools to report embedded emissions accurately.
  • Clarification of CBAM reporting formats: Helping suppliers understand regulatory expectations and align their data submissions with CBAM standards.
  • Gap analysis and resolution: Identifying missing or inconsistent data and working with suppliers to close gaps through targeted follow-up and support.
  • Capacity building and training: Offering resources and workshops to improve supplier understanding of CBAM and their role in compliance.
  • Ongoing communication and tracking: Maintaining regular contact and progress tracking to ensure timely and complete data collection.

Submission-ready reporting

We provide structured documentation and emissions files aligned with CBAM methodology -ready for declarations, audits, and assurance reviews.

Future-ready compliance

We help you prepare for expanding CBAM scopes and evolving regulations, building resilience and adaptability into your carbon reporting processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which products are currently covered under CBAM?

CBAM currently applies to imports of steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, and electricity. The scope may expand over time.

How do I know if my business is affected by CBAM?

If you import covered goods into the EU, CBAM likely applies. We offer assessments to clarify your obligations based on product codes, volumes, and supply chains.

What if I don’t have complete emissions data from my suppliers?

We support supplier engagement and offer guidance on estimating or calculating emissions using accepted standards when data gaps exist.

What happens if my business is not compliant with CBAM?

Non-compliance may lead to penalties, customs delays, or increased costs. Early action and accurate reporting are key to maintaining market access.
