Approach and Delivery

Our client operates an ageing asset with high-hazard process structures at risk of extreme temperature exposure from potential pool or jet fires.

Passive Fire Protection (PFP) ensures structural stability during such events, but signs of corrosion under the PFP were identified across several areas.

Due to the risk of structural defects given the age and environment of the structure and the critical need to ensure structural reliability, we were tasked with assessing the structural condition and capacity of the structure to support the process equipment.

Our Approach to Project Delivery

  • Initial Assessment: Desk Study of Record Information, Laser Scan & Drawings Confirming Existing Structural Arrangement, General Visual Inspection, Definition of Design Loads, Initial Modelling, Basis of Design Report.
  • Site Based Investigation: Targeted opening up works to confirm residual steel section and connection details. NDT including ultrasonic testing and hardness testing.
  • Detailed Monitoring: Refinement of structural models for 7No. plant support structures according to investigation findings.
  • Assessment Report: Summary report confirming utilisation ratios for critical structural members along with recommended remedial action.

Project Outcomes

  • Initial Assessment highlighted some members were over-utilised.
  • Targeted site based investigation minimised site disruption.
  • Refinement of the structural model based on actual loading condition and practical consideration of structural behaviour optimised structural repair work.
  • Temporary propping specified to strengthen the structure in critical locations only.
