IEMA changes to ISEP: A New Era for Sustainability Professionals
8th July 2025
The sustainability profession is evolving, and so is the body that represents it. As a provider of specialist training for environmental and sustainability professionals, we welcome the transition of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) to its new identity: the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP).
This change marks more than a rebrand; it reflects a broader shift in the sector toward integrated sustainability leadership. At Arthian, we see this as a pivotal moment for the profession – one that acknowledges the increasingly complex demands and opportunities of the global sustainability landscape.
Why Make a Change?
Over the past 25 years, IEMA has been a central voice for environmental practitioners worldwide. With over 22,000 members across 125 countries, its influence has been considerable. However, as sustainability has grown to encompass social, economic, and systems-level concerns, the need for a name that reflects this wider remit became clear.
The result is ISEP: a name that signals both continuity and ambition, capturing the future-facing, interdisciplinary nature of the profession.
What Does This Mean for Arthian’s Learners?
We understand that changes of this kind bring practical questions. Here’s what we know so far and how it may affect your training experience:
- The ISEP brand will be formally introduced to the public on 17 July 2025. From that date, all branding and communications will reflect the new identity.
- Existing IEMA post-nominals will be updated to align with ISEP. These designations will continue to signify the same level of professional competence and recognition. From 17 July:
- AIEMA becomes AISEP (Associate)
- PIEMA becomes PISEP (Practitioner)
- MIEMA becomes MISEP (Full Member)
- Our training course titles will be updated to reflect the ISEP branding. While the name and visual identity will change, the course content and certification standards remain consistent. For example:
- IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management → ISEP Foundation Certificate in Sustainability & Environmental Management
- If you are currently enrolled in or complete a course prior to the rebrand, your certificate will remain valid and transferable under the new designation.
- Certificates issued for training completed on or after 8 January 2025 (the legal date of IEMA’s transition to ISEP) will feature the new ISEP branding. Certificates for earlier completions will continue to display the IEMA name.
Supporting Your Professional Journey
At this stage, ISEP’s official website contains limited information about the rebrand, but we remain in direct contact with their team to ensure our training aligns with the most current guidance. At Arthian, we believe in advancing sustainability through evidence-based education, we view this evolution as a vital step toward greater clarity, inclusivity, and relevance within the profession. We will continue to provide updates as they become available and are committed to ensuring a smooth and transparent transition for all our learners. If you have any questions or wish to explore our ISEP-aligned course offerings, please get in touch with our team.
The Future is Sustainable (and It Needs Skilled Professionals)
ISEP’s new identity reflects a recognition that sustainability is no longer a niche concern – it’s a defining opportunity for our time. Whether you’re just entering the field or deepening your expertise, we’re here to support your development as part of a global movement working toward a more resilient, equitable future.
